GIS Does Web Design

Did you know the GIS Lab does web design?  The Weyr Media team is responsible for maintaining the websites of several local organizations, further connecting Washington College to the local community. The most recent project is the creation of a new website for the Town of Galena.

Town of Galena

Galena, a town of 600 people about 30 minutes from Washington College, wanted an updated web presence to emphasize the benefits of life in their charming town. Under staff member Emily Aiken, GIS interns Liberty Frank and Michael Deck worked to develop the website. Galena’s new website includes an interactive business directory, an events listing, and an animated weather widget showing the local conditions. Future plans for the website include a secure portal that will allow residents to pay their bills online. The social media team also developed online platforms for the town, including Facebook and Twitter, to help Galena reach out to a wider audience.  The town will also have a blog to keep locals updated on goings on in town.

To celebrate the new website, the GIS Lab partnered with Galena Elementary school to offer fifth and sixth graders the opportunity to win gift cards to Galena businesses. Students were asked to submit essays and/or piece of artwork that represent why they love Galena. The winning submissions will be posted on the town’s blog in the coming weeks. For their effort, first place winners for each category (essay and artwork) will receive a $50 gift certificate to a local Galena business; 2nd place will receive $40; 3rd place will receive $30; and runners-up will receive $15.

Past Weyr Media clients include MapStory, Maryland State Police Licensing Division, the Upper Shore Regional Council and Harvest Directory. The team is also currently working on contracts for Turkey Point Vineyards and the Rhodes Store.

Join the GIS Lab, the Town of Galena and the Historical Society of Kent County this May  at the Bordley Building in downtown Chestertown, to celebrate the history of Galena! Food and drink will be provided.
